Modern Ukrainian ballistic missiles "Sapsan" have already proven their effectiveness in competitions against Russian "Iskanders." According to military analyst Konstantin Krivolap, "Sapsans," with a lighter launch system, can be deployed faster and strike more quickly. For example, unlike the "Iskander," which deploys in 20 minutes, the "Sapsan" can prepare for launch carefully and quickly in 12-15 minutes.
This autumn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the "Sapsan" has begun to be actively used on the front lines alongside other weapons such as "Neptune" and "Palyanitsa." Although details about the number of launches are not disclosed, there are already mentions that Ukrainian troops have effectively struck Russian launch positions of "Iskanders." "There is information that we have hit some of the "Iskander" launchers. By using "Sapsans," we were able to strike while the enemy was just preparing for launch," the expert says.
Potential and Strategic Importance of the "Sapsan"
According to analytical assessments, the "Sapsan" can significantly change the course of the war. Krivolap noted that 80% of Russia's military-industrial complex is concentrated in the Moscow region and nearby areas. If Ukraine manages to establish mass production of "Sapsans," Russian factories could face more frequent strikes, threatening their ability to produce weapons.
However, analysts urge not to overestimate the importance of a single missile. "One should not expect that one or several strikes will suddenly change the situation. Real changes can only occur through a combination of actions and systems employed," Krivolap concludes.
History of the "Sapsan" Development
The history of the "Sapsan" development has been ongoing for more than 30 years, starting from Ukraine's independence. Experts note that despite some legacy from the Soviet era, the missile integrates modern technologies, making it competitive on the modern battlefield.
In this context, it is also worth mentioning other advanced Ukrainian missiles, such as "Flamingo," which also hold significant potential in combating Russian aggression.
