A horrific criminal act occurred in Volyn: poachers killed two elk, which are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. The incident took place outside the village of Vichyni, in the Dorosynivka territorial community of the Lutsk district.

During a scheduled inspection, a state environmental inspector found clear traces of wild animal blood in two locations. About 15 meters from these traces, the remains of two elk were discovered.

The State Environmental Inspection of Volyn region noted that the illegal capture of wild animals, particularly elk, which is a species under special protection, entails criminal responsibility. According to Article 248 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, “illegal hunting” is punishable by fines that can reach several hundreds of non-taxable minimum incomes.

Moreover, the offenders may be held liable for compensation for damages caused by the illegally obtained elk; their value is about 130 thousand hryvnias each. There may also be restrictions or deprivation of liberty.

The State Environmental Inspection urges citizens to be vigilant and report any known incidents of poaching. A hotline is available for this: (0332) 72-33-96.
