The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) detained former Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko on the night of February 15 while he was attempting to leave Ukraine. The incident occurred at the border crossing when Halushchenko was removed from the train, reports "Ukrainska Pravda".
According to sources, the border service acted in accordance with a directive provided by anti-corruption agencies. The border guards had an official request from NABU and SAP regarding the detention of Halushchenko in case he attempted to leave the country. This is a common practice if an individual is involved in criminal cases.
This incident comes amidst an escalation of anti-corruption actions in Ukraine, particularly following recent searches involving businessman Timur Mindich and the aforementioned minister. Previously, on November 10, news broke about the exposure of a large-scale corruption scheme in the energy sector, which sparked widespread public reaction.
The news of Halushchenko's detention is still developing, and details of the incident are currently being clarified.
