On the night of January 3rd, Venezuela's capital Caracas was rocked by powerful explosions that occurred around 2:00 AM local time. According to preliminary data, at least seven explosions were heard in the southern part of the city, where a large military base is located.
The Reuters agency reported a complete power outage in this area of the city. Eyewitnesses describe a noticeable column of smoke and low-flying aircraft in the sky above the city.
US Involvement
US military forces, according to unofficial reports, may be involved in the incident. US President Donald Trump had previously repeatedly stated the possibility of ground operations in Venezuela as part of pressure on President Nicolas Maduro.
Social media is spreading reports of an alleged US attack on Venezuelan military infrastructure. However, there is currently no official confirmation of this information.
Context of Events
Previously, the US had carried out operations against Venezuelan vessels suspected of drug smuggling. In particular, in December, US troops controlled an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela.
The Venezuelan government has not yet provided an official comment on the explosions in Caracas.
