The German company "Rheinmetall" has received a large order from one of the NATO countries for the supply of several hundred "HERO" kamikaze drones. The total value of the contract is over 100 million euros, and deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2026 and continue until the end of the year.
This contract includes three models of "HERO" drones, which are actively manufactured at the "RWM Italia" plant with the support of the Israeli company "UVision Air." The smallest modification, the "HERO 30," was specifically designed for infantry, weighs 3 kg, and can operate at a range of up to 10 km with a payload of 0.5 kg. The "HERO 120" drone is intended for targeting armored vehicles at a range of up to 40 km, while the "HERO 400" can engage in combat operations at distances of up to 100 km, potentially striking fortifications.
Drone Specifications
All "HERO" drone models are equipped with cameras and thermal imagers, allowing for real-time surveillance. The operator can make a strike decision while observing the target. This enables the engagement of various targets, including tanks, air defense systems, and shelters, without the need for air support.
Interestingly, the "HERO 120" model is becoming quite competitive, as its specifications can be compared to the Russian "Lancet" drones. Historically, "HERO" drones have an X-shaped structure, which gives them significant maneuverability.
Context of the Order
The order for "HERO" drones from "Rheinmetall" is part of NATO's managed defense program, which aims to modernize and enhance the capabilities of the alliance's combat forces. Thus, this agreement strengthens NATO's position in the face of ongoing challenges to global security.
It is worth noting that "Rheinmetall" is already planning to expand its production at new facilities in Italy to meet the growing demand for modern military technologies.
