US President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky are preparing for important negotiations in Washington, which may take place this week. The key topic of discussion will be a peace plan consisting of 19 points that were raised during recent talks in Geneva.
According to the publication “The Telegraph,” representatives from both countries plan to focus on the final details of the agreement, which is intended to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. During the negotiations held in Switzerland, the majority of the points of this plan were agreed upon, according to White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have already convened a “Coalition of Willing” meeting in Geneva; however, their aides were reportedly unaware of the latest plan. Major political issues, such as territorial exchanges and new security relations between the US, NATO, and Russia, remain sticking points.
Negotiations in Geneva
During the talks in Geneva, the delegations of Ukraine and the US agreed on a new plan that shortened from 28 to 19 points. Meanwhile, the most sensitive issues of the plan were left for consideration by Presidents Trump and Zelensky themselves.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented that the parties have managed to achieve “significant progress,” though the details of the document have not yet been disclosed. A joint statement between Ukraine and the US emphasizes the importance of respecting Ukraine's sovereignty in the new peace plan.
It is currently unknown whether the meeting between Trump and Zelensky will take place, as the White House has not confirmed that the negotiations are scheduled for this week. However, in light of recent events, many experts hope for a positive outcome.
In light of recent developments, the question of Russia's involvement in the negotiations and its willingness to compromise remains relevant.
