Russia may use North Korean military personnel to replace its own troops in regions bordering Ukraine, allowing Russian forces to be redeployed to the most active areas of the front. This scenario was outlined by Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army.

According to Bratchuk, Moscow may be considering North Korean troops as a way to compensate for a shortage of personnel in the Russian military. North Korean units could potentially take over some duties currently performed by Russian forces along the border with Ukraine.

Such a move would allow Russia to free up its own troops and send them to the most heavily contested sections of the battlefield.

Bratchuk mentioned Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions, as well as the northwestern part of the Voronezh region, as possible areas where North Korean personnel could be deployed.

At the same time, it remains unclear whether North Korean troops would be directly involved in combat operations in Ukraine. Another potential challenge is coordination between Russian and North Korean forces, particularly because of the language barrier.

North Korea's military cooperation with Russia could also provide Pyongyang with valuable battlefield experience from the war in Ukraine. This could create additional security risks in the Asia-Pacific region.

Against this backdrop, Ukraine has expressed its readiness to strengthen cooperation with South Korea in response to the growing military partnership between Russia and North Korea.
