What Happened

On January 31, a large-scale technological disruption occurred in the Ukrainian energy system, leading to emergency power outages in several regions of the country.

Official Incident Details

According to Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, at 10:42 there was a disconnection of 400 kV lines between the energy systems of Romania and Moldova and 750 kV lines between western and central regions of Ukraine.

Blackout Consequences

As a result of the accident, metro operations in Kyiv have been stopped, and there is no water supply in all districts of the capital. Emergency power outages have been implemented in Chernihiv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Odesa regions, and Kyiv city.

Government Reaction

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally heard reports from Denys Shmyhal and Yulia Svyrydenko regarding the situation. According to him, the main task now is to stabilize the energy system.

Ukrenergo power engineers are working to restore electricity, and according to preliminary forecasts, power should return within the next few hours.
