Outbreak of Dangerous Disease in West Bengal
India has recorded a new outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus, causing serious concern among medical experts. As of January 25, five cases of infection have been confirmed, including medical workers.
Main Virus Characteristics
The Nipah virus is considered extremely dangerous due to its high mortality rate - between 40 and 75%. The disease is characterized by severe complications, including:
- Acute encephalitis
- Inflammation of brain membranes
- Respiratory problems
- Neurological disorders
Disease Progression
The incubation period ranges from 4 to 14 days, although cases up to 45 days have been observed. Initial symptoms resemble the flu: fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea. Later, severe complications can develop, including coma.
Prevention and Treatment
Currently, no vaccine for the Nipah virus exists. The World Health Organization has identified it as a priority for research due to the potential threat of a global pandemic. Scientists at Oxford University are working on developing a vaccine, but practical application is not yet available.
Local authorities in West Bengal have already implemented quarantine measures: about 100 people are under home isolation, and infected individuals are receiving treatment in Kolkata hospitals.
