In Odesa, starting from November 26, a new initiative has been officially introduced to honor the memory of those who died in the war against Russia. As part of a nationwide minute of silence, at 9:00 AM every day, traffic lights at specific intersections in the city will display a special red signal to stop vehicles.
This important initiative was initiated by Oleg Kiper, the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration. He noted that this measure symbolizes our remembrance of those who gave their lives for our freedom. “A symbolic minute of pause is the least we can do for those who sacrificed their lives so that we can live, work, and simply stand here at this intersection today,” emphasized Oleg Kiper.
Before launching the new system, specialists conducted thorough preparation of the technical elements. They practiced an atypical operating mode for the traffic lights, tested the equipment, and coordinated safety with the patrol police. Currently, the red signal functions at eight intersections, but plans for expansion in the future are underway.
Planning and Support
It is also worth noting that other cities, like Kyiv, have previously joined this initiative. In Kyiv and the region, this signal has been in effect since September 23, and the practice of stopping vehicles during the minute of silence is planned to be spread across Ukraine. Local officials emphasized the importance of all citizens participating in this moment of remembrance.
“Neither orders nor actions can compel someone to feel the significance of this moment—each person arrives at it on their own,” Kiper added. Therefore, we urge everyone to remember the fallen at 9:00 AM, joining in a minute of silence in memory of those who gave their lives for our country.
