In Ukraine, December 12 is celebrated as Land Forces Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, established by the decree of the President of Ukraine on October 18, 1997. This holiday recognizes the contributions of the land forces as the largest branch of the Armed Forces in ensuring the nation’s defense capability.
Significance of the Land Forces for Ukraine
Today, we honor the mechanized, armored, and artillery troops, army aviation, air defense units, and special forces. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky, emphasized that it is the land forces that hold the frontline defense of the country. According to him, “the land forces are the force that merges mechanized and armored units, artillery and rockets, army aviation and air defense, drones and robotic systems, special forces and support units.”
Successes and Challenges on the Front
At the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion, it was the ground troops that became the first shield in the struggle against the aggressor. Syrsky noted that the Ukrainian infantry defended Kyiv, liberated Kherson region, and destroyed the enemy in combat operations in the Slobozhansky direction.
He stated: “Fortifications are important, but they are useless if there are no Ukrainian infantry in them.” Today, the Land Forces are undergoing an unprecedented transformation right on the battlefield, incorporating drones and modern combat systems into their arsenal.
Recognition and Respect for Heroes
On this day, Ukraine also honors the memory of all soldiers of the Land Forces who have died in the struggle for the country's independence. The Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, noted on Telegram: “This holiday is for those who bravely repel Russian assaults on all front lines.” He thanked the defenders for their dedication and courage.
Remembering the fallen soldiers, Shmyhal said: “Eternal memory to those who returned home on their shield.” The words “Glory to the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine! Glory to the Ukrainian military!” resonate with the wish of strength and perseverance for all defenders.
