European Union Strengthens Energy Support for Ukraine

The European Union continues to provide extensive assistance to Ukraine during martial law. This week, the EU announced another urgent support package, which includes 500 generators and 50 million euros to overcome the consequences of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.

This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, during a press conference in Brussels. "Russia is using winter as a weapon," she emphasized. "Therefore, energy is now the new front line".

Support Details

According to Kallas, the total EU energy fund for Ukraine has already exceeded 1.6 billion euros. In addition to generators and financial assistance, the European Union is creating a special working group to coordinate energy support for Ukraine.

The EU representative also noted that member states continue to explore possibilities of transferring additional air defense means to Ukraine.

Consequences of Russian Attacks

As a result of massive bombardments of critical infrastructure in Ukraine, hundreds of life-support facilities remain damaged as of the end of January. In particular, almost 640 multi-story buildings in Kyiv were left without heat.

The CEO of Naftogaz of Ukraine, Serhiy Koretskyi, reported that due to damage from Russian attacks, Ukraine was forced to import 5.7 billion cubic meters of gas last year.
