The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported a historic event — the first instance where underwater drones Sub Sea Baby attacked the Russian submarine of the 636.3 'Varshavyanka' class in the port of Novorossiysk. As a result of the explosion, the submarine sustained critical damage and was effectively put out of commission.

This incident was made possible through the joint efforts of the 13th Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence of the SBU and the Naval Forces of Ukraine. On board the submarine, in addition to the destruction, there were four launchers for cruise missiles 'Caliber', which are used by Russia to attack Ukrainian territory.

Historic Achievement

The 'Varshavyanka' class submarine, also known as the 'Black Hole' due to its low noise level, was valued at approximately 400 million dollars. Building a similar submarine under the current conditions of anti-Russian sanctions could cost around 500 million dollars. This class of submarines is characterized by its low noise level and improved hydroacoustic system.

The SBU emphasizes that the 'Varshavyanka' submarine was forced to be in Novorossiysk due to the expulsion of enemy ships from Sevastopol Bay, which is currently under Russian control, by Ukrainian drones.

Context and Consequences

In 2023, the SBU already conducted a successful attack on the enemy submarine 'Rostov-on-Don', confirming the growing capabilities of Ukrainian military forces in maritime areas. The explosion caused by the underwater drone was significant for the further development of the war and Ukraine's adaptation to new strategic challenges.
