Russia is increasing the scale of its aerial attacks against Ukraine by deploying larger numbers of strike drones, including jet-powered Shahed UAVs. At the same time, Ukraine's Defense Forces are adapting their tactics and expanding a multi-layered defense system to counter the evolving threat across the air, sea, and coastal regions.

The update was shared by Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, during a national television broadcast.

Russia Relies on Larger Drone Waves

According to Pletenchuk, Russia continues to compensate for its lack of innovative battlefield solutions by relying on mass attacks.

"As always, the Russians are counting on numerical superiority. That is essentially their only option. Developing new technologies and tactical solutions is much more difficult. We are seeing a growing number of jet-powered Shahed drones, but the main change is the increase in the overall number of attack platforms," he said.

Military analysts note that the use of faster jet-powered drones presents additional challenges for Ukraine's air defense network, requiring quicker detection and interception.

Ukraine Deploys Layered Defense Against Drone Threats

To counter the intensified attacks, Ukraine has expanded its integrated defense system using multiple military branches and advanced technologies.

Among the assets currently protecting Ukrainian territory are:

  • interceptor drones designed to destroy hostile UAVs;
  • Air Force air-defense units;
  • Ground Forces air-defense elements;
  • Ukrainian Navy ships and patrol boats;
  • coastal defense units monitoring maritime approaches.

This layered approach allows Ukraine to engage aerial threats from multiple directions before they reach critical infrastructure or civilian areas.

Maritime Security Remains a Priority

Pletenchuk also emphasized that Russia continues attempts to disrupt Ukraine's civilian shipping routes and limit the country's export capabilities through attacks in the Black Sea region.

Despite these efforts, Ukrainian Defense Forces have inflicted significant losses on Russian naval assets and continue protecting maritime logistics that remain vital for the country's economy.

Adapting to a Changing Threat

As Russia increases the use of jet-powered Shahed drones and larger coordinated attack waves, Ukrainian forces continue improving interception technologies and operational tactics. Military officials stress that the evolving battlefield requires constant adaptation to protect both civilians and critical infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated aerial threats.
