Today, January 6, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Lord's Baptism, or Theophany - one of the most important church holidays of the year.

Spiritual Significance of the Holiday

According to biblical traditions, upon reaching the age of 30, Jesus Christ was baptized in the waters of the Jordan by John the Baptist. During the ceremony, the Holy Spirit descended to earth in the form of a dove, and a voice from heaven proclaimed the Savior as the Son of God.

Traditions and Rituals

Traditionally, believers attend festive liturgies and bless water. In Ukraine, there is a widespread custom of cutting ice holes in water bodies in the shape of a cross. After the blessing, people immerse themselves in the ice hole and pray.

Main Prayers of the Day

On Baptism, special prayers are traditionally read:

  • Prayer before taking blessed water
  • Prayer before bathing
  • Prayer for health
  • Prayer for Ukraine

The Church emphasizes that bathing in an ice hole is a personal choice, not an obligation.
