The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) officially announced a change in the date of Epiphany celebration in 2026 due to the transition to the New Julian calendar. This year, the Baptism of the Lord will fall on January 6th.

Reasons for Date Change

In 2023, the OCU decided to switch to the New Julian calendar, which is considered more accurate and modern. Due to this calendar reform, all non-movable holidays, including the Baptism of the Lord, have shifted 13 days earlier.

Significance of the Holiday

Epiphany (Baptism) is one of the most important Christian holidays, symbolizing the moment of Jesus Christ's baptism in the Jordan River. During the baptism, the fullness of the Holy Trinity was first seen by the world: God the Father spoke from the heavens, the Son of God was baptized in the waters, and the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove.

Celebration Traditions

On Epiphany, Ukrainians observe many traditions: blessing water in churches and natural water bodies, bathing in an ice hole traditionally shaped like a cross, and preparing a lean festive table.

Epiphany is not just a church event, but a profound spiritual connection with the cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people.
