Today in the Ivanovo region of Russia, an incident occurred involving a military transport aircraft An-22, resulting in the deaths of all seven crew members and passengers. According to emergency services, the aircraft, which had seven people on board, crashed during a routine flight following repairs.
According to information provided by the TASS agency, the An-22 is owned by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. It has been reported that the aircraft crashed near the Uvodsky Reservoir in the Furmanov district. Preliminary data suggests that the aircraft may have experienced a technical malfunction, as it had been in operation for over 50 years.
Details of the disaster
The An-22, known as the "Antey," was a record-holder for size among aircraft with turbojet engines and was designed for the transportation of heavy military equipment. It was the last aircraft of this class still in operation in Russia. At the time of the crash, the aircraft may have begun to disintegrate in the air, and debris was found in the reservoir.
Significance of the An-22
Aviation expert Konstantin Krivolap explained that the An-22 was created during the arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States. Notably, in the 1960s, 720 paratroopers were dropped from an An-22, and films were dedicated to this aircraft.
It is worth noting that there was a previous incident in Sudan where an Il-76 crashed, also due to technical failure, resulting in significant losses for Russian aviation.
According to Kommersant, all crew members and passengers are considered deceased. This tragic event once again underscores the issues arising from the aging aviation technology that is operated by Russia.
