U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are preparing for crucial negotiations regarding a new peace plan developed during recent discussions in Geneva. Both leaders will meet this week to discuss the final details of a 19-point agreement aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine.

The key issues in these negotiations will include politically sensitive topics such as territory exchanges and new security relations between the U.S., NATO, and Russia. During the discussions in Geneva, representatives from the U.S. and Ukraine managed to reduce the initial 28-point plan to 19 points, while leaving the most contentious issues to the discretion of the presidents.

Changes in American Tactics

Media reports indicate that the new approach to negotiations has been clearly marked by the involvement of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who, according to experts, has altered the strategy of the American side. In particular, Rubio has slowed the pace of negotiations, emphasizing the need to take into account the positions of Ukraine and its allies.

In response to questions from journalists on Sunday evening, Rubio stated that the goal is to conclude discussions as quickly as possible, rather than by a set deadline. His participation has certainly breathed new life into the negotiations, opening up opportunities for greater flexibility from the U.S. compared to previous rigid conditions.

Kremlin Rejects Proposals

Meanwhile, the Kremlin has dismissed the European proposal for negotiations, which could hinder progress in achieving peace. European leaders, such as U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, also participated in meetings in Geneva; however, their involvement in the talks between Trump and Zelensky is not anticipated.

Thus, the next phase of peace negotiations lays the groundwork for further cooperation between the U.S. and Ukraine while international efforts are directed at accelerating financial assistance to Ukraine through frozen Russian assets.

Observers note that despite all the difficulties, the negotiations are heading in the right direction, but caution is necessary due to the lack of agreement from Russia.
