The United States has softened its stance on the peace plan for Ukraine with new negotiator Rubio
The negotiations between the United States and Ukraine regarding peace with Russia have gained new momentum thanks to the involvement of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. His entrance onto the scene marked a change in the tactics of the American side, which until now had been based on tough ultimatums.
As reported by "European Truth," with Rubio's appearance in Geneva on November 23, the tone of the negotiations has noticeably shifted. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, emphasized that the path to peace still requires significant efforts; however, American officials assert that Ukraine has already agreed to certain basic conditions of the new 19-point peace agreement.
According to sources from Politico, the selection of Dan Driscoll, the U.S. Army Secretary, as the main negotiator in the early stages raised concerns, as his approach was deemed too rigid. Nevertheless, Rubio's visit prompted the Trump administration to reconsider its positions and take into account the opinions of the Ukrainian side.
Despite some optimism, Zelensky stressed that work is ongoing. He noted that as a result of the meetings in Geneva, there are "many prospects" that could help realize the peace agreements. At the same time, it is important to emphasize that some of the most challenging issues remain to be addressed by the presidents of both countries.
Yesterday, flexibility in the U.S. position was facilitated, and Rubio likely played a key role in this transition. During his press conference, he assured that the goal is to conclude discussions as quickly as possible.
At the same time, Russia's response to the proposed agreement has been cold. According to media reports, representatives of the Russian Federation have already dismissed the updated peace plan, indicating the need for further efforts on the part of the U.S. and Ukraine to reach a consensus.
Ukraine now needs to focus on the final steps regarding the agreement, and in this regard, a visit by Zelensky to the U.S. is planned to finalize the agreement with President Trump.
Ultimately, Rubio's involvement in the negotiations may prove to be a decisive factor in achieving peace in the region. As one European official noted, "the situation looks much better" with Rubio at the helm of the negotiating process.
