Volodymyr Yezhov was born on August 1, 1984, in the city of Lubny, Poltava region, Ukraine. Because his family frequently moved, he began school in Kherson and later graduated in Kyiv. From an early age, he showed a passion for game design, creating board games for himself and his younger brother.

After graduating from high school, Yezhov enrolled at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, where he studied Automated Control Systems. During his university years, he became deeply involved in computer gaming and competitive esports, achieving success in StarCraft under the nickname Fresh.

Building Some of Ukraine's Most Famous Video Games

In 2007, Volodymyr joined GSC Game World as a game designer, overseeing the creative development of video games from concept to release.

Among the projects he worked on were Cossacks II, one of Ukraine's most recognizable strategy games, and the iconic S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky. His own appearance was used as the model for Loki, the leader of the Freedom faction, one of the game's most memorable characters.

His brother, Vyacheslav, recalls that turning everyday life into a game was part of Volodymyr's personality.

"Throughout his life, he constantly gamified reality, creating engaging activities for friends, family, children, and colleagues. It became one of the defining aspects of who he was."

A Patriot Long Before the War

Volodymyr came from a family with deep Cossack roots, something he was immensely proud of. Even before the Revolution of Dignity, at a time when Russian culture remained dominant in many parts of Ukraine, he deliberately embraced Ukrainian identity.

"He shaved his head and grew a traditional Cossack forelock. It was a symbolic rejection of Russian cultural influence," his brother recalls.

During the Revolution of Dignity (Euromaidan), Volodymyr actively participated in the protests and later helped organize military training for volunteers.

Professionally, he also worked at Frogwares, contributing to games such as World of Battles: Morningstar, Call of Cthulhu, and Sherlock Holmes: Devil's Daughter, before joining the startup Hogsmith Games.

According to his brother, strategy games were always his greatest passion because they required balancing complex systems and coordinating different forces.

Choosing the Battlefield Over a Comfortable Life

Shortly before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Volodymyr received an opportunity to relocate to Portugal for work. He refused, explaining that he was already preparing for war.

When Russia launched its invasion, he immediately joined the volunteer unit UVO, named after the Ukrainian Military Organization, and helped defend Kyiv while serving in aerial reconnaissance.

In the summer of 2022, he transferred to the Separate Presidential Brigade named after Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, where he became commander of the aerial reconnaissance unit in the 23rd Special Purpose Battalion, fighting in the Donetsk region.

His Final Mission

On December 22, 2022, during combat operations near Bakhmut, the vehicle carrying Volodymyr and his team struck a landmine. He was killed in action.

He was laid to rest at Lisove Cemetery in Kyiv.

For his courage and dedication in defending Ukraine, Volodymyr Yezhov was posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, Third Class.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Volodymyr Yezhov will be remembered not only as a talented Ukrainian game designer who helped create world-renowned video games, but also as a soldier who chose to defend his country with the same determination and commitment that defined his creative work.

Eternal memory to the Hero. Glory to Ukraine's defenders. 🇺🇦
