Large-Scale Emergency Power Outages Paralyze Capital City Transportation

On January 31, 2026, large-scale emergency power outages began in Ukraine and Moldova, causing the metro to stop in Kyiv and other cities.

According to the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA), due to the disappearance of voltage from external power supply centers, train movement and escalator operations in the metro have been temporarily suspended.

Emergency power outages were recorded almost throughout Ukraine, including in:

  • Sumy Oblast
  • Chernihiv Oblast
  • Zhytomyr Oblast
  • Mykolaiv Oblast
  • Kyiv Oblast
  • Odesa Oblast
  • Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

Moldova's Energy Minister Dorin Jungiyetu reported that the cause of the large-scale disconnection was serious problems in Ukraine's electrical grid.

Ukrenergo confirmed the application of emergency power outages almost throughout the country.
