Today, December 11, the Christian church celebrates the feast in memory of St. Nikon of the Caves. This day is known in Ukraine as Nikon's Day and is filled with traditions and special customs related to winter signs.

Honoring St. Nikon

St. Nikon, also known as Nikon the Dry, lived in the 11th century and was the abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. He left worldly goods and dedicated his life to prayer and repentance. During his life, he endured numerous trials, including captivity, but thanks to his faith and strength of spirit, he achieved significant spiritual successes.

Traditions and Signs on Nikon's Day

On this special day in Ukraine, it is customary to invite light into one's home by lighting many candles. This is considered a sign of hope for increased brightness and protection from negativity. Among the traditions, there are also purification rituals: people tidy up their homes and wear clean clothes.

Interestingly, there are a number of prohibitions on this day. For example, it is not recommended to quarrel, as it is believed that this can bring misfortune into the home. Also, one should not take sharp objects or remove anything from the house, so as not to lose prosperity.

Angel's Day and Its Traditions

Today, name days are also celebrated for those named Daniel, Ivan, Luka, Mykola, and Petro. When congratulating loved ones, warm words about their qualities can be spoken, highlighting the love and support brought by their heavenly patron.
