This week in Ukraine, Pancake Week, or Maslenitsa, has begun — a time traditionally devoted to making pancakes and other cheese-based dishes. Ethnologist Olena Shcherban explained that this week has significant cultural and social characteristics, as it is also called "Babyn Week."
According to traditions, each day of Maslenitsa has its own characteristics: Monday is dedicated to girls, Tuesday — to young women, Wednesday — to brides, Thursday — to daughters-in-law, Friday — to mothers-in-law, and Saturday — to supporting widows. Sunday concludes the week with a communal celebration. It is a time of unity, mutual support, and communication with loved ones.
Culinary Traditions of Maslenitsa
During Maslenitsa, in addition to pancakes, Ukrainians also prepare various cheese dishes, such as dumplings and cheese pancakes. This holiday, symbolizing preparation for Lent, encompasses not only culinary customs but also religious aspects. For example, this year the last Sunday of Maslenitsa, known as Forgiveness Sunday, falls on February 22.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) reminded the faithful of the importance of this week as a time for repentance, reconciliation, and good communication. It should be noted that in the middle of the week, particularly on Wednesday and Friday, there are no church services; however, believers can enjoy a festive table.
Maslenitsa is not only about cuisine but also about preserving traditions and social connections in Ukrainian society, which are especially valued in difficult times.
