On November 22, Ukraine commemorates the memorial day for the victims of the Holodomor of 1932–1933, as well as the mass man-made famines of 1921–1922 and 1946–1947. The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, together with the NGO "Wikimedia Ukraine," calls on all concerned citizens to join the campaign "Candle of Memory for the Victims of the Holodomor."

At 4:00 PM, candles will be lit in every home in memory of the innocent victims of the communist regime. "Preserving the memory of these tragic events is our collective responsibility," emphasize the organizers of the campaign.

Participation in the Campaign

The "Candle of Memory" campaign starts today and will run until December 1. It involves not only lighting a candle but also the opportunity to create and improve articles in Wikipedia dedicated to the Holodomor. This allows for the expansion of the informational space of the Ukrainian-speaking Wikipedia and supports the preservation of memory about the genocide of Ukrainians.

Historical Context

According to historians' estimates, during the Holodomor of 1932–1933, between 3.9 to 7 million people died in Ukraine. These events are considered one of the largest genocides of the 20th century. Ukrainians opposed the forced collectivization, which led to the tragedy when the Soviet authorities consumed the resources of the peasants.

It is worth noting that since the memory of the Holodomor was often suppressed, it is important to activate discussions and document testimonies of those events.

We Remember Together

Join the campaign by participating in local commemorative events for the victims of the Holodomor or by contributing to Wikipedia, illustrating articles with photos from your personal photo stream. Each of us can make our contribution to preserving this memory.

May the lit candle be a symbol of our memory and respect for the millions of victims of the famine tragedy.
