Bulgarian President Rumen Radev announced his official resignation, effective January 20. In a televised address, he explained his decision as a desire to personally participate in upcoming early parliamentary elections.

Radev became the first democratically elected president of the country to step down prematurely. His decision stems from the political deadlock following the resignation of Rosen Zhelyazkov's government and the inability to form a new cabinet.

President's Plans

In his speech, the head of state harshly criticized the "oligarchy" and traditional political elites, accusing them of betraying national interests. Although Radev did not directly announce the creation of a party, analysts believe that his resignation gives him free rein to lead a new political project.

Successor

After the Constitutional Court accepts his resignation, powers will transfer to Vice President Iliyana Yotova. She will become the first female president in Bulgarian history and will lead the country until January 2027.

Yotova's temporary duty is to appoint a technical government and determine the date of spring elections.
