At the 2026 Olympics in Milan, the American pair "Madison Chock" and "Evan Bates" won a silver medal in figure skating. However, this victory was accompanied by controversy related to the judges' scoring.
Judging Sparks Controversy
In the highly publicized pair, Chock and Bates, who are three-time world champions, brought silver to Ukraine at the awards ceremony. However, discrepancies arose in the judges' scores, particularly from the French judge who awarded higher marks to the French pair "Laurence Fournier Beaudry" and "Guillaume Cizeron." The pair secured first place in the rhythm dance with a margin of 0.46 points.
"We went through an 'emotional rollercoaster,' especially over the last 24 hours," Chock stated in an interview. "But we can be proud of how well we performed," she added.
Bitter Defeat and Objectivity in Figure Skating
After the second performance, Chock and Bates had a good score but could not surpass the 'champions' in the overall standings. According to the scores, however, judges from Spain and France once again favored the French athletes. "There is significant variability in figure skating judging," commented representatives from the "International Skating Union."
Context and Relationship History
Interestingly, "Guillaume Cizeron" and "Laurence Fournier Beaudry" became partners after lengthy careers at other times. "We had many similarities in how we trained," Cizeron noted.
In the meantime, a controversy recently arose in Cizeron's personal life, as his former partner "Gabriella Papadakis" accused him of "controlling" behavior. Cizeron admitted that this situation created additional stress.
Future Prospects
Chock and Bates leave this Olympics with new ambitions. "We want to celebrate our success and give ourselves the opportunity to enjoy life after such intense training," Bates concluded.
