Today, December 8, Ukraine celebrates the feast day of Saint Venerable Patapius and the Martyr Anfisa of Rome. It is a day with deep religious roots and rich folk customs.

History of the Holiday

The Venerable Patapius was born into a pious family in Thebes (Egypt). He dedicated his life to spiritual service, spending many years in prayer and asceticism in the Egyptian desert. Patapius gained a reputation as a healer and spiritual mentor, sought after for help. After spending a long time in the desert, he settled in Constantinople, where his gift of healing became well known. The Martyr Anfisa, on the other hand, was baptized by Saint Ambrose of Mediolanum and was martyred for her steadfastness in faith.

Traditions and Customs

December 8 is marked by special attention to handicrafts. Among Ukrainian women, there is a tradition to embroider and prepare for weddings in the coming year. It was believed that handicrafts done on this day bring luck and happiness to the family. Additionally, folk omens indicate that the results of this day can predict the weather for the following year.
