With the approach of Christmas, which Orthodox Ukrainians celebrate on December 25th according to the new calendar, the tradition of caroling gains special relevance once again. Ukrainian Christmas carols remain one of the brightest and most beautiful traditions of celebrating the main Christian holiday.

History of Ukrainian Christmas Carols

Although today carols are an integral part of Christmas celebration, their roots reach back to pre-Christian times. During the winter solstice, Ukrainians held celebrations in honor of Kolyada - a god who symbolized the sun and fertility. In songs, people expressed support for light and called for protection.

With the spread of Christianity, the holiday of Kolyada was replaced by Christmas, but the tradition of caroling was preserved. Ritual songs were adapted to the religious context - now they praised the birth of the Savior, glorified his Mother and heavenly angels. At the same time, the ancient rhythm and melodiousness remained unchanged.

Most Popular Ukrainian Christmas Carols

Among the most famous traditional carols that Ukrainians sing at Christmas, a special place is occupied by:

"New Joy Has Come"

New joy has come, which has never been,
Above the nativity scene a bright star shone with light.
Where Christ was born, incarnated from the Virgin,
As a man humbly wrapped in swaddling clothes.

"Good Evening to You, Master of the House"

Good evening to you, master of the house, rejoice!
Oh rejoice, earth, the Son of God is born!
Spread the tables with carpets, rejoice!

"The Eternal God Was Born"

The eternal God was born,
Came today from heaven,
To save all his people,
And was comforted.

The Tradition of Caroling Today

Nowadays in Ukraine, people of different ages carol - from children to adults. Most often this is done by children and teenagers who go from house to house, greet people with the holiday and receive sweet treats, various refreshments and money for it. But carols can also be sung in the family circle, creating a cozy festive atmosphere at home.

In traditional ritual songs, carolers praise the birth of Christ and wish the hosts all blessings, health and prosperity. This creates a special spiritual atmosphere of the holiday, uniting people in the common celebration of the greatest Christian feast.

Christmas carols remain a living tradition that is passed down from generation to generation, preserving the spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian people and creating the unique atmosphere of Christmas.
