This morning in Kyiv, in an apartment on Lesya Ukrainka Square, the death of 41-year-old Dmytro Kadenyuk, the son of the first astronaut of independent Ukraine, Leonid Kadenyuk, was discovered. His mother, Vira Kadenyuk, found her son's body near the entrance to the apartment.
According to information received by journalists, numerous cuts and stab wounds were found during the examination of the body. Dmytro was holding a knife in his hand, and the nature of the injuries indicates a possible struggle. At the time of discovery, no suicide note was present.
Following reports of the tragedy, the police opened a criminal investigation under Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - intentional murder. An investigation into the circumstances of the death is currently ongoing.
Background
Leonid Kadenyuk, Dmytro's father, was a famous Ukrainian test pilot and political figure. He became the first astronaut of independent Ukraine, making a flight on NASA's "Columbia" shuttle in 1997. Kadenyuk died in January 2018 from a heart attack.
After his death, disputes arose among family members over the inheritance, including a four-room apartment in Kyiv. According to acquaintances of the family, Vira Kadenyuk and her son were receiving threats from Leonid Kadenyuk's other son, Vladyslav, who also claimed the inheritance.
