Kharkiv residents have only a 10% chance of seeing snow on New Year's night, reported Inna Kondaurova, head of the weather forecast department at the Regional Hydrometeorological Center. At the same time, forecasters promise true winter weather with frosts during the last week of the year.

Weather for New Year holidays: frost without snowfall

According to Kondaurova, it will be frosty in Kharkiv region during the New Year holidays. "At night we will have light minus temperatures, during the day - light plus, but still we can say that the weather will be frosty," the forecaster noted.

Regarding snow on New Year, expectations are small: "There may be light snow, but we don't expect such snowfalls as we were used to a few years ago." More precise information is promised closer to December 31st, as the center makes forecasts only five days ahead.

General picture for Ukraine: real winter will come

Leading forecaster of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center Ivan Semilit reported that during the last week of 2024, the weather in Ukraine will be truly winter-like. At night, negative temperatures will prevail - on some days frost will reach -11 degrees, in the Carpathians even -14 degrees.

Already on Friday, cloudiness will increase, and snow and blizzards are expected in the northern parts of Kharkiv, Poltava, and Cherkasy regions. Ice will form on roads, and wind gusts will reach 15-20 meters per second.

  • Friday, December 27: cloudy with clearings, snow in places, temperature at night -4...-6°C, during the day around 0°C
  • Saturday, December 28: cloudy, light snow, at night -4...-2°C, during the day around 0°C
  • Sunday-Monday, December 29-30: snow, at night -4...-10°C, during the day -1...-7°C

Statistics of snowy holidays in the region

According to the Regional Hydrometeorological Center, over the past 30 years, snowy New Year holidays in Kharkiv region have become a rarity. The least snow falls on December 31st, the most - on Christmas Eve (December 24th).

Currently, in some western districts, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Poltava and Kharkiv regions, snow cover 1-3 centimeters high has already formed. In mountainous areas, significantly more snow has accumulated - up to 12 centimeters.

The final forecast regarding snow on New Year in Kharkiv will be known closer to the end of the week.
