The history of Saint Spyridon

Saint Spyridon was born around the year 270 in Cyprus to a poor family. In his childhood, he worked as a shepherd, and this simple work instilled in him a deep sense of humility and love for God and his neighbors.

After the death of his wife, he became the bishop of the city of Trimythous and became famous for his miracles. Saint Spyridon participated in the First Council of Nicaea, where he visibly demonstrated the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, earning recognition among the believers.

Today, his relics are preserved on the island of Corfu, where pilgrimages take place every year.

Traditions and signs

On Spyridon’s day, believers turn to the saint with requests for the health of children and parents, blessings in marriage, and harmony in the family. There is a tradition to prevent misfortunes by cleansing the home with frosty air.

Prohibitions on December 12

  • Wearing old clothes is not recommended, as it may bring poverty and misfortune.
  • It is advised not to set off on a long journey; if it is impossible to postpone the trip, one should pray before departure.
  • Refusing to give alms is forbidden, as this may lead to personal difficulties.
  • It is not advisable to make plans or loudly speak about new beginnings.
