Today in the Zhytomyr region, a tragic event occurred: the Russian army carried out a missile-drone attack on the region, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.
Results of the Shelling
According to the head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, Vitalii Bunechko, a child born in 2021 died as a result of the strike. Medics attempted to save the young patient’s life, but unfortunately, it was not possible. Another child and an adult, with shrapnel wounds, were hospitalized in Zhytomyr hospitals.
Maria Kotsiuk, head of the "Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine" of the Zhytomyr Regional Council, specified that one of the hospitalized children was diagnosed with a closed abdominal injury. The adult is in serious condition with shrapnel wounds to the chest.
Infrastructure Damages
Besides human losses, significant damage to residential buildings, civil infrastructure, and private enterprises was reported. Emergency power outages were implemented in the region, as reported by «Zhytomiroblenergo».
Another attack occurred a day earlier when as a result of a strike on a freight train near Korosten, 4 Ukrzaliznytsia employees were injured. The consequences of the Russian attacks have already been felt by many residents of the region due to train delays and power supply disruptions.
Official Statements
The head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, Vitalii Bunechko, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and again urged residents to follow safety requirements during air raid alarms. He also emphasized the seriousness of the threat from the Russian Federation, which systematically violates international law by attacking civilian objects.
Ukrainian authorities and international organizations characterize these actions as war crimes. They call for increased international pressure on Russia to stop the armed aggression against Ukraine.
