Today, December 14, Ukraine celebrates a church holiday dedicated to the memory of Saint Philomon the Great Martyr and other martyrs who expressed their faith during the persecutions of the 3rd century. This date is known among the people as Philomon's Day, and it is considered one of the most dangerous days of the year.
History of the Holiday
On December 14 according to the new Orthodox calendar, the memory of not only Philomon but also the martyrs Apollonius, Arian, and Theothicus is honored. It is known that Philomon and Apollonius initially secretly professed Christianity, but after they openly declared their faith, they were executed. Against this backdrop, their courage impressed their torturer Arian, who also accepted baptism and paid for his restoration with a martyr's death.

People believe that December 14 is associated with danger, as it is said that evil forces come out on this day. To protect themselves, our ancestors followed several rules:
- It is important to wash, as evil spirits fear water;
- To tidy up the house — cleanliness drives away evil;
- To wear fresh clothes, so as not to attract evil spirits.
Additionally, to increase the chances of success in important matters, people would sprinkle a few drops of water on themselves.
