Maslenitsa 2026 has already begun, and Ukrainians are actively celebrating this joyful event, which lasts from February 16 to 22. This year is marked not only by traditional dishes but also by unique Ukrainian rituals that distinguish our celebration from similar traditions in neighboring countries.
Traditional Ukrainian Dishes
On the festive table in Ukraine, not only popular pancakes prevail, but also dumplings with cottage cheese, which are traditionally generously served with sour cream and butter. "Dumplings will prove that bread will not be given," joke the townspeople, emphasizing the importance of this dish in Ukrainian culture.
Forgiveness Sunday and Special Traditions
Cheese or Maslenitsa Sunday, also known as "Women's Sunday," has deep roots in Ukrainian folklore. During this period, according to traditions, Ukrainians usually do not consume meat and eat dairy products, eggs, and fish.
Interestingly, on the last day of Maslenitsa, Forgiveness Sunday, everyone observes the tradition of asking for forgiveness from loved ones, laying bare their hearts before the Great Lent that begins the following week.
Ritual of "Kolodiik"
One of the most unique traditions of Maslenitsa in Ukraine is the "Kolodiik" ritual. This custom, symbolizing the "birth" of a log, allows married women to influence the fate of single young men in the village. Traditionally, girls tie a wooden log to the arms or legs of unmarried young men, who must "redeem" themselves with gifts or treats.
Celebration in a Modern Context
Today, Ukrainians are increasingly returning to their traditions, seeking deep meanings in familiar holidays. Maslenitsa not only becomes a moment for fun but also an opportunity to unite with family, remember the significance of simple joys, reflect, and invite new beginnings into their lives.
