Today, February 9, the world celebrates International Dentist Day, which is dedicated to the doctors who care for the health of our smiles. The choice of this date is associated with the figure of Saint Apollonia, considered the patron saint of dentists. Special honor is given today to military dentists who provide assistance to the defenders of Ukraine at the front, standing by them in the most difficult times.
Church traditions and holidays
On February 9, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of martyr Nicephorus of Antioch. In folk tradition, this day is called Nicephorus-Pankrati. According to ancient beliefs, this is one of the most significant days, when it is particularly favorable to turn to Saint Nicephorus with prayers for peace, healing, and reconciliation.
Furthermore, this day is considered an opportunity to begin treatment from February 9. There is a belief that illnesses addressed on this day recede faster. Modern doctors also emphasize the importance of a rational approach to health.
Traditions and prohibitions for today
On this day, it is customary to engage in household chores, clean, pay attention to one's health, and also inspect footwear. However, there are a number of prohibitions that should be observed. For instance, it is not recommended to quarrel, envy, or gossip. Laziness on this day can lead to negative consequences, including financial ones.
Those celebrating their name day should congratulate individuals such as Nicephorus, Pankratius, Gennadius, and others in honor of the saints mentioned by the church today.
On the occasion of International Dentist Day, we should thank all the doctors who care for our health every day, especially those who perform their work in frontline conditions.
