On January 25, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Gregory the Theologian - a prominent Archbishop of Constantinople, theologian and philosopher who lived in the 4th century.

Saint's Life Path

Born in 329 in Cappadocia (territory of modern Turkey), Gregory came from a noble Christian family. He was a close friend of Basil the Great, with whom he studied in Athens.

Church Significance

The saint was called "Theologian" for his profound sermons about the Holy Trinity, which helped protect Christian doctrine from contemporary heresies. He is considered the patron of students and theologians.

Folk Traditions

In the people, the day is called "Gregory's Day". There is a belief that today one should perform secret good deeds, avoid quarrels and foul language. According to folk signs, the weather before noon predicts the nature of the rest of the winter.

Spiritual Practices

Believers turn to Saint Gregory with prayers for strengthening health, help in raising children and family matters. They especially honor the icon of the Mother of God "Calm My Sorrows".
