4-year-old Dakota and 3-year-old Carson Culkin watch the film as an ordinary fairy tale, not understanding that the main character Kevin is played by their dad. According to the actor, he deliberately keeps this secret to "preserve the magic" of children's perception.

Several times the children were close to solving the mystery. Once, while looking through family photos, his son noticed a picture of a boy who, in his opinion, "looks like Kevin". Macaulay quickly distracted the children by showing a photo of his aunt.
