The third part of James Cameron's cinematic saga, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," successfully debuted in global theaters, collecting $345 million in its first weekend since its release on December 18, 2025, according to Deadline.

Out of this amount, $257 million came from international markets, with the highest earnings recorded in China ($57.6 million), France ($21.4 million), Germany ($18 million), South Korea ($13.6 million), and the United Kingdom ($11.9 million). Meanwhile, the domestic box office in North America reached $88 million.

The film achieved a respectable status in many markets, becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the first weekend of 2025 in all countries except Japan. The film also set IMAX records, being shown on 1,703 screens worldwide.

Box Office and Reviews

The total box office for all parts of the "Avatar" franchise has exceeded $5.6 billion. However, despite a strong start, the new film falls short of the results of the previous instalment, "Avatar: The Way of Water," which collected $435 million over the same period in 2022. The visual execution of the third part received rave reviews, although the plotlines drew mixed criticism.

Considering a budget of $400 million, analysts note that "Avatar: Fire and Ash" needs to exceed $1 billion in box office sales to be profitable, excluding marketing costs.

The Future of the Franchise

Director James Cameron previously stated his plans to make a fourth and fifth film of the franchise, with releases scheduled for 2029 and 2031 respectively. However, the final decision will depend on the financial success of the third part.

Currently, the film studio "Disney" is also impressing, as the animated film "Zootropolis 2" confidently holds the lead in international box office, raising total earnings to $1.27 billion.
