Journalists from Ukrainska Pravda analyzed new video footage of the high-profile incident involving officers of the SBU and HUR and reconstructed the sequence of events. According to the publication’s findings, Serhii Ivanov, a member of the “Timur” unit, was the first to open fire.
According to Ukrainska Pravda, the conflict was preceded by the detention of Stepan Kaplunov. The SBU reportedly received information that Russian intelligence services had allegedly recruited him to prepare the assassination of Russian opposition figure Akhmed Zakayev.
According to the journalists, Kaplunov later admitted to having contacts with the FSB and began cooperating with the Ukrainian security service. At the same time, HUR leadership and representatives of the military intelligence agency’s internal security unit also cooperated with the SBU as part of efforts to prevent the alleged assassination attempt.
The situation escalated during a search operation. After analyzing the available video footage, journalists concluded that Serhii Ivanov was the first to use a firearm against SBU officers and representatives of HUR’s internal security unit.
Another dangerous episode occurred the following morning. According to Ukrainska Pravda, another HUR officer pointed a handgun at an SBU officer. After a warning shot was fired, SBU special forces used their weapons, firing at his legs.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, according to the latest available information, the conflict between the SBU and HUR has now been resolved, and both agencies continue to carry out their duties.
