President of the United States Donald Trump announced important trade negotiations with the leaders of Mexico and Canada, set to take place after the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Washington.

Trump's statement was made as he arrived at the draw, which occurred at the Kennedy Center. He noted: “We will meet with both, and we get along very well”. This indicates an intention to discuss key trade issues that the U.S. president highlighted during his visit.

Trade Issues and Immigration

When asked by journalists about the possibility of discussing immigration policy and trade, Trump confirmed that these issues would also be central to the meeting. This coincides with the intent of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada to review their trade agreements amid rising tariffs from the U.S.

President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum, who also plans to have her first in-person meeting with Trump since taking office, mentioned that she would briefly meet with him and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Current Trade Relations

Amid increased tariffs, Trump announced additional 10% tariffs on Canadian goods in response to an advertising campaign broadcasted in the U.S. Ontario Premier Doug Ford assured that it would soon be suspended; however, Trump remained dissatisfied with the current situation.

Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, stated that the Canadian government is ready to resume trade negotiations at any moment, affirming their willingness to engage in dialogue.

These events are taking place during a time of significant economic changes and heightened political tension in North America, particularly due to unexpected actions by Trump that could impact relations among the three countries.
