Direct quote: "At the extraordinary meeting of the Kyiv Defense Council on Friday, after consultations with the communities, we made the decision to resume education in general secondary education institutions from January 19."

Details: Kalashnyk emphasized that he considers this decision justified and important.

He also noted that decisions regarding the start of education are made taking into account sanitary norms and the security situation.

"Currently, there are educational institutions in the prepared communities that are equipped with shelters, alternative power sources, thermal insulation of buildings, connected individual boilers, and organized hot meals. For this, we searched for donors together and financed this work from the state and regional budgets," he added.

At the meeting of the Defense Council, it was also decided to shorten the duration of lessons to 30 minutes, and the end of classes in the second shift should occur no later than 16:00.

Special attention was paid to the condition of the roads, which should be as clear and safe as possible. Additional organizations are planned to be involved for this.

Direct quote: "Over the weekend, we checked the readiness of schools in the communities for the resumption of the educational process, particularly regarding compliance with temperature regulations.

Therefore, today the Defense Council recommends that communities independently make decisions about the start of the academic semester and publish this information on official resources. Unfortunately, not all communities managed to prepare adequately for the start of the educational process. In this regard, it is necessary to hold meetings of the TEB and NS commissions and determine specific dates for the start of education, as well as a list of educational institutions ready to begin."

What preceded: On January 16, the First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal reported that in Kyiv winter holidays in general secondary education institutions will be extended until February 1 2026.

"For other regions – either a transition to distance learning format, or an extension of holidays also until February 1," Shmyhal noted.
