In the Kyiv region, classes in schools will resume on January 19, but communities have the right to independently determine the start date of the academic semester.

Direct quote: "At an extraordinary meeting of the Kyiv Defense Council on Friday, after consultations with communities, we made the decision to resume the educational process in general secondary education institutions starting January 19."
Details: Kalashnyk emphasized that he considers this decision to be correct and necessary.
He also stressed that decisions regarding the start of classes are made taking into account sanitary norms and the security situation.
"Currently, in the prepared communities, there are educational institutions with shelters, alternative power sources, completed thermal rehabilitation of buildings, connected individual boilers, and organized hot meals. We searched for donors together and financed this work from state and regional budgets," he noted.
At the meeting of the Defense Council, it was also decided to reduce the duration of lessons to 30 minutes and to finish classes in the second shift no later than 4:00 PM.
Particular attention was paid to the condition of the roads, which must be maximally cleared and safe. Additional organizations will be involved for this purpose.
Direct quote: "Over the weekend, we checked schools in the communities, assessing their readiness to resume the educational process, particularly in terms of maintaining the temperature regime.
Therefore, today the Defense Council recommends that communities independently make decisions regarding the start of the academic semester and publish this information on official resources. Unfortunately, not all communities have managed to prepare adequately for the start of the educational process. In this regard, it is necessary to hold meetings of the TEB and NS commissions and determine specific dates for the start of classes, as well as a list of educational institutions that are ready to begin."
What preceded: On January 16, the First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal announced that in Kyiv winter holidays in general secondary education institutions will be extended until February 1 2026.
"For other regions – either a transition to distance learning format or an extension of holidays until February 1 as well," Shmyhal noted.
