On December 25, at the age of 83, Russian actress Vera Alentova died, known for her role as Catherine in the film "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears," which won an Oscar in 1981. This was announced by the Moscow Pushkin Theater, where the actress worked for over 60 years.
Alentova became ill during the farewell ceremony for actor Anatoly Lobotsky at the Mayakovsky Theater. Emergency doctors tried to resuscitate her, but were unable to save her. According to unofficial data, the cause of death was acute heart failure against the background of heart problems after suffering from coronavirus.
Biography and Career
Vera Alentova was born on February 21, 1942, in Kotlas. After her father's death, she moved with her mother to Ukraine to Kryvyi Rih, where she spent part of her childhood. In 1965, she graduated from the studio school at the Moscow Art Theater and began working at the Moscow Pushkin Theater.
The actress gained greatest fame for her role as Catherine in the film "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" (1979), directed by her husband Vladimir Menshov. The film won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Among Alentova's other notable works are the films "Tomorrow There Was War," "Shirley-Myrley," "Balzac Age." Her last role was in the film "Empire V" (2022).
On Ukraine's "Black List"
In 2021, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine added Vera Alentova to the list of persons who pose a threat to national security. The reason was her tours and participation in propaganda events in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea.
The actress is also listed in the "Peacemaker" center's database for deliberately violating Ukraine's state border and participating in events in occupied territory. Her husband, director Vladimir Menshov, held a similar position, repeatedly making Ukrainophobic statements and openly supporting Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.
Menshov died in 2021. The couple has a daughter — actress and TV host Julia Menshova.
