Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin became the hero of the Spanish Cup match in which Real Madrid faced the team Talavera at El Prado stadium in the 1/16 finals of the tournament. The player of the Ukrainian national team debuted as captain for Real and played a key role in his team's 3-2 victory.
Lunin led the Madrid team onto the field with the captain's armband for the first time, marking a symbolic moment for the Ukrainian footballer. Despite the star-studded lineup of the opponents, like Kylian Mbappe, who provided significant support in the attack, Lunin brilliantly fulfilled his duties.
The Madrid team secured a comfortable lead in the first half. In the 41st minute, Mbappe converted a penalty, and just before the break, Talavera's defender put the ball into his own net after a cross from the French striker. However, the hosts were not ready to give up and reduced the deficit in the 80th minute. Yet, Mbappe restored the goal difference, scoring a brace before the end of regular time.
Still, in added time, Talavera managed to score again. But with heroic actions in the last seconds, Lunin preserved the winning result for his team. His performance received support from the club's former captain, legend Luka Modric, who congratulated the Ukrainian on Instagram with the words: "What a captain."
The victory allowed Real to advance to the 1/8 finals of the Spanish Cup. For Lunin, it was only the second match of the season, but it was this game that became special and extremely important for his career.
