Following another massive Russian missile attack on Ukraine's critical infrastructure on January 22, strict electricity supply schedules were introduced in most regions of the country. The government is forced to limit electricity supply due to significant damage to the energy system.
Scale of Power Outages
According to DTEK, power outage schedules provide for over 16 hours without electricity in most regions. The most difficult situation is in Kyiv, Kyiv Oblast, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa Oblasts, and frontline regions.
Reasons for Restrictions
Russian missile strikes on January 20 caused significant damage to Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Energy, since October, the occupiers have destroyed over 8 GW of generating capacity.
Outage Schedules
Different regions have individual power outage schedules:
- Kyiv: almost 20 hours without electricity
- Mykolaiv Oblast: up to 18 hours of outages
- Kharkiv Oblast: 6 hours in queues
- Zaporizhzhia Oblast: 5 hours in queues
Government Response
The government is taking measures to overcome the consequences of the attacks. In particular, electricity import from the European Union has been increased to 2 GW, and an energy-saving mode has been introduced in the municipal sector.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the current electricity deficit is 7 GW, and full restoration will take a considerable amount of time.
