Russian forces launched a series of missile strikes on a thermal power plant in the suburbs of Kharkiv on the morning of December 24. As a result of the attack, one person was killed and 13 others sustained injuries of varying severity.
This was reported by the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleg Synegubov and Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov.
Consequences of the Attack on the City
The strikes on the thermal power plant caused a significant voltage drop in Kharkiv, which negatively affected the operation of the city's infrastructure:
- Problems with heat supply throughout the city
- Temporarily complicated operation of electric transport in the districts of Rohan, KhTZ, New Bavaria and Cold Mountain
- There were interruptions in metro operation, but service has already been restored
- Emergency power outage schedules have been implemented
Rescue Operations and Recovery
According to Mayor Terekhov, specialized services are currently conducting damage assessment and determining the real scale of destruction. Where technically possible, the energy system is being switched to "energy island" mode to reduce consequences for city residents.
All victims have been hospitalized and are receiving highly qualified medical care. Initially, 11 wounded were reported, but the number later increased to 13 people.
Large-Scale Attack on Energy System
The strike on Kharkiv's thermal power plant was part of a large-scale attack by Russian forces on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on the night of December 24. As a result of the attacks, new power outages were recorded in Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions.
The situation is particularly difficult given weather conditions: according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, December 24 in Kharkiv has sub-zero temperatures — up to six degrees below zero during the day, down to -10 degrees at night.
